In response to the recent article published by Het Parool, we feel it is important to speak directly to our community, our members, our team, and everyone who has followed this story with concern.
The stories shared in the article are deeply upsetting. No one should ever be subjected to unsafe, exploitative, or degrading working conditions, not here, not anywhere. These accounts stand in direct opposition to the values we uphold. Any form of mistreatment under the Saints & Stars name is entirely unacceptable to us.
Where we stand
We have taken time to listen carefully, speak to those involved, and begin gathering the facts. A situation this serious deserves more than a quick reaction; it demands transparency, responsibility, and meaningful action.
Our values
Our mission has always been to create an environment where people feel safe, respected, and empowered, not only for our members, but also for our trainers, staff, and every individual who contributes to our community. Values such as care, integrity, and fairness are at the heart of everything we do.
Our perspective
Based on what we know at this stage, the reality diverges significantly from how the situation has been portrayed. While finding skilled cleaners has been a challenge, it is our company policy that everyone who works with us should be paid fairly and treated with respect. To our knowledge, every hour worked has been compensated. We have always acted in good faith and complete alignment with our values.
Our response
We are fully cooperating with the ongoing investigation by the Dutch Labour Authority. We welcome this investigation and take the matter with the utmost seriousness. The article includes both factual and legal inaccuracies, as well as a number of claims that we dispute. Nevertheless, if it becomes clear that individuals have been mistreated, we will take full responsibility and act decisively to ensure it never happens again.
The steps we are taking
In addition to fully cooperating with the Dutch Labour Authority, we are taking the following steps:
We have initiated the process of appointing an independent research organisation to conduct a thorough and objective review. We believe this is a necessary step toward full accountability.
The management team responsible for cleaning operations has been temporarily suspended, pending the outcomes of both investigations.
We are establishing a foundation focused on fighting labour exploitation in the Netherlands. More details will follow soon; we are committed to real, lasting change.
With respect and sincerity,
Tom Moos
CEO, Saints & Stars
WE WERE PROUD TO BE SELECTED
This year, we were honoured to be selected as the very first gym ever to join the Amsterdam Canal Parade. A powerful moment to celebrate strength, inclusivity & individuality - values deeply rooted in our community.
WHY WE'RE STEPPING ASIDE
After careful reflection, we've decided to step back. Although we firmly believe in our position in the matter that has arisen from the investigation launched by the Dutch Labour Authority, we also believe our presence would risk shifting attention away from what truly matters: Pride itself. This day is not about us; it's about visibility, love, freedom, equality and the right to be fully yourself. If there's even a chance that our appearance would overshadow that message, then the right thing to do is step aside.
PRIDE DESERVES THE SPOTLIGHT
Pride is a protest. A celebration. A powerful call for visibility, equality, and freedom. It's not about us - it's about everyone who still needs to be seen, heard, and fully accepted for who they are.
WE'RE HANDING THE STAGE TO THE COMMUNITY
So we're doing what we believe is right: donating our spot to the Pride Amsterdam community. Pride Amsterdam will ensure the boat becomes a true platform for their voices, stories, and celebrations.
STILL STANDING FOR PRIDE
We won't be on the canals this year. But we'll be cheering from the sidelines as a proud supporter of the movement. With full respect for what Pride truly means.
